About me
Obert Rukato, Clinical Psychologist
I am a Clinical Psychologist working primarily within South Africa's public mental healthcare system, with experience across inpatient and outpatient settings, severe psychiatric illness, trauma, addiction, and youth mental health. My clinical work is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and shaped by a deep belief in the healing potential of relational work, historical formulation, and culturally responsive care.
Alongside clinical practice, my work and interests sit at the intersection of psychology, sport, research, policy, and community development. I am particularly interested in how football and other forms of sport can function as powerful mental health interventions — supporting identity formation, emotional regulation, and alternative, healthier expressions of masculinity among boys and young men. I see sport-based mental health work not only as therapeutic or preventative, but as a critical entry point for wider social, developmental, and policy-level change.
